“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” Ephesians 2:10
We all have a desire to be remembered by people when we leave this world. Everyone wants to leave a legacy, a place in the history book of the world, a footprint on this earth. We want to leave a legacy that is honorable. We shouldn’t be concerned about being memorable, but rather we should want to leave a legacy that is designed and orchestrated by God. Leaving a life that will inspire and motivate others to live a Godly life. Our primary purpose for wanting to leave a footprint should be to please our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To hear him say “well done good and faithful servant”.
The first step to leaving a footprint is to recognize what kingdom we are in. We must recognize the kind of life we are living. We are either with God or the enemy. There is NO in-between. So, we have to ask ourselves what kingdom we are in. Deuteronomy 30:19-20 says “This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings, and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob”. These two verses show us that we have to choose either life OR death, blessings OR curses. We are to choose life and things of God’s kingdom. We have to decide for ourselves whose kingdom we belong to because that determines the kind of footprint we’ll leave and where we will spend eternity.
Leaving a footprint in the Kingdom of light means that you are discovering the purpose and plan God has for you and bringing it to completion in the time He has given you. 2 Peter 1:14-15 says, “For our Lord Jesus Christ has shown me that I must soon leave this earthly life so I will work hard to make sure you always remember these things after I am gone.” Peter is reminding us here of our purpose just as he was about to leave the earth. He still ensured that God’s purpose was his pursuit even with the short time he had left. This should show us the importance of yielding to God’s plan for us.
Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the plans I have for you’, declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” He who created our innermost being surely knows our end from the beginning. He has written out all of our days before they even came to be. When we accept Jesus into our life, we are coming into a life full of purpose. We no longer live aimlessly. God’s plan for our life is supreme. He has a specific plan for each and every one of us. We just have to seek Him to find out what that plan entails.
The second thing we have to ask ourselves is “who and what are we giving our attention to?” Once we get into the kingdom of God, we are brand-new creatures, like a baby. We won’t know everything right away. That is why we have to spend time fellowshipping with God and His word. Our attention can no longer be on the things that don’t belong in the kingdom of God. The company we now keep also matters a lot. We can no longer be conformed to this world.
We should make good use of every opportunity we have. This can only be done by listening and yielding to the Holy Spirit. Through faith and obedience to Him, we can begin to take steps that actually matter. Living a spirit-filled life guarantees that we are leaving the right footprint. If every step you take is going to leave a footprint, then take HIS step!
