Defined by God, not by Circumstance

Defined by God, not by Circumstance

By Pastor Victor Anjorin

Job 19:25–27 “But as for me, I know that my Redeemer lives, and He will stand upon the earth at last. And after my body has decayed, yet in my body I will see God! I will see Him for myself. Yes, I will see Him with my own eyes. I am overwhelmed at the thought!”

Every believer should be filled with a deep sense of awe and excitement simply because God loves us. This truth alone is powerful and life-changing, and it is one the enemy fights tirelessly to hide from you. Job understood this truth in the passage above. Even in the midst of unimaginable suffering, he held on to the revelation that God would remain faithful to him. Job refused to let his situation define his identity or undermine his confidence in God.

To live in victory, you must know who you are in Christ. The enemy does not want you to walk in this revelation, so he uses distractions, discouragement, and negative thoughts to make you forget who you really are. He wants you to see yourself as weak, defeated, or pitiful when challenges arise. However, God wants you to boldly embrace your true identity. When you carry the consciousness of who you are in Christ, you stand stronger, speak with authority, and face life’s storms with unwavering confidence.

Your identity is not based on feelings, circumstances, or other people’s opinions. Your identity is defined by what God has declared about you in His Word. This identity strengthens you, sets you apart, and marks you as His own. You are not insignificant. You are not forgotten. You are not just “getting by.” You are a beloved child of the living God.

John 1:12–13 “But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. They are reborn—not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God.”

Your identity begins with believing and accepting what Jesus Christ has done for you. When God looks at you, He sees the righteousness of Christ, the One who secured your place in God’s family. Yet when difficulties arise, the enemy will try to cloud your mind and make you forget who you are. He knows exactly who you belong to, but the pressures of life can cause “spiritual memory loss,” giving him room to attack your confidence. This is why you must stay conscious of your identity at all times, whether things are going well or falling apart. When you confront the enemy, confront him with the authority that Jesus has given you. His name and His power are at your disposal

Key Points to Remember

  •  Do not forget who you are, even in the toughest situations. A difficult season does not change your identity. Do not allow a temporary situation to erase the eternal truth of who God has declared you to be. No matter how long the challenge lasts, God remains God, He remains faithful, and you remain His child. Refuse to give up your dreams or let discouragement shape your identity. Situations come and go, but the identity God gave you is permanent.
  • When you are firmly rooted in your God-given identity, negative thoughts and self-doubt lose their power over you. Understanding who you are in Christ empowers you to stop seeing yourself through the lens of fear, insecurity, or discouragement. A secure identity reshapes your mindset, strengthens your confidence, and silences the enemy’s lies. Instead of accepting negative thoughts about yourself, you begin to speak, think, and act according to what God has declared about you.
  • Your words must align with your identity. Psalm 34:11–13 reminds us to guard our speech. Never speak lies or negative declarations over yourself. A lie is not only telling something untrue; it is also believing or speaking the opposite of what God says about you. When you contradict God’s declaration, you are cursing what He has blessed. Speaking against your destiny weakens your identity and limits what God wants to manifest in your life.
  • Agreement with God is necessary for your identity to flourish. For God’s Word to manifest, you must partner with Him through faith, obedience, and confession. When you live in opposition to God’s instructions or doubt what He has spoken, you hinder what He desires to bring to pass. Stop overanalyzing God’s Word. Instead, anchor yourself in what He has said. Stand firm in your identity, and allow God’s truth to shape your thoughts, actions, and expectations.
