Reigning in Life Through Christ

Reigning in Life Through Christ

By Pastor Chinedu Emmanuel

Romans 5:17 “For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!”

In a world marked by uncertainty, moral compromise, and constant spiritual distractions, God’s desire for His people remains unchanged. Scripture consistently reveals that God intends for believers to reign in life through Jesus Christ. This does not mean a life without difficulties. Rather, it means living from a place of spiritual authority, inner stability, and alignment with God’s will, regardless of the circumstances that arise. Reigning in life is about who is ruling on the inside. When Christ is Lord, external challenges may come, but they do not dominate or define us.

Grace Has Equipped Us to Reign

When we received salvation, God did more than forgive our sins. He placed within us a new nature. This new nature is righteous and aligned with Him, making holiness the natural outworking of an inward transformation. In the same way, a woman does not wake up each day striving to be a woman, a believer is not called to strive to be righteous. A woman lives out her identity naturally because it is who she is. Likewise, when we are born again, righteousness flows from who we have become in Christ, not from constant effort or religious performance.

Just as a child grows into who they were born to be, a believer grows into Christlikeness. Growth takes time, but the identity is already established. Holiness develops as we mature, not because we are trying to earn God’s approval, but because we are learning to live out what God has already placed within us. Scripture tells us in Romans 5:17 that through one man, Adam, death reigned, but through Jesus Christ, those who receive God’s abundant grace and the gift of righteousness will reign in life. This reign is not earned by effort alone, it is made possible by God’s grace. He has already provided everything we need for life and godliness through Christ.

The enemy often attempts to convince believers that holiness is unrealistic or impossible, but Scripture consistently affirms that God would never command what He has not empowered. What God calls us to walk in outwardly, He has already deposited within us inwardly. When we embrace the new nature He has given us, living a holy life becomes a natural expression of who we are in Christ.

Living to Please God, Not People

Reigning in life begins with clarity of purpose. As believers, our primary goal is to please God, not people (2 Corinthians 5:9). Too often, we fall into the trap of flattering God, doing religious things that look spiritual or impressive, rather than genuinely seeking to honor Him. When pleasing people or performing for God becomes our priority, our spiritual authority weakens, and compromise creeps in. The fear of man quietly shifts our focus away from true obedience and toward approval. Living to please God brings freedom. It removes the constant pressure to measure up to others’ expectations. Decisions become simpler, direction becomes clearer, and peace replaces anxiety. Obedience positions us to experience God’s guidance and protection fully.

Jesus modeled this perfectly. He said, “I always do those things that please the Father” (John 8:29). Because His life was fully aligned with God’s will, the Father’s presence was never absent. The same principle applies to us today. When our hearts aim to genuinely please God, His presence becomes a guiding force in every area of life. This is how we begin to reign in life through Christ.

The Power of Dwelling in God’s Presence

Psalm 91 describes the believer who dwells in the secret place of the Most High, a place of safety, protection, and divine covering. Dwelling in God’s presence is not meant to be occasional. It is a lifestyle cultivated through obedience, trust, and intimacy with Him. This is central to reigning in life. When God’s presence accompanies us, we walk in authority, peace, and victory, even in challenging circumstances.

When we live according to God’s will, His presence goes with us everywhere, into our homes, workplaces, relationships, and responsibilities. God is not limited to church or quiet moments of prayer. He is meant to be carried into every ordinary and extraordinary part of life. Reigning in life is not just about personal victory. It is about living in a way where God’s power flows through us, influencing the world around us. Jesus emphasized this in John 14:21–23, teaching that God manifests Himself to those who love Him and keep His word. Christianity is not merely a set of beliefs or moral rules. It is a living relationship with a present and active God. Reigning in life begins here, in a heart and life fully open to His presence and guidance.

Reigning Requires Discipline and Honesty

Grace empowers us, but it also provides structure. God’s boundaries are not restrictions meant to limit joy. They are protections that safeguard spiritual growth. From the Garden of Eden to the New Testament, God has always set boundaries because He knows what sustains life. Walking within these boundaries requires discipline. Discipline keeps us from rationalizing sin or choosing the easier path. It helps us remain consistent in prayer, steadfast in character, and faithful in obedience, even when growth feels uncomfortable or slow.

Reigning in life also requires honesty. God desires truth in our hearts. True growth does not come from excuses, denial, or comparison, but from humility, confession, and repentance. Honest self-examination opens the door for God to transform us fully into who He has called us to be. This alignment between our heart, our actions, and God’s will is essential to living as overcomers and reigning in life through Christ.

A Life That Makes a Difference

When God’s presence is active in a life, it becomes evident. Take Joseph, for example. “The Lord was with him” (Genesis 39). Even as a slave and later a prisoner, Joseph prospered, not because his circumstances were ideal, but because God’s presence went with him. That presence gave him authority, wisdom, and influence wherever he was placed.

This is the life God desires for every believer. It is a life that carries His presence, impacts others, and exercises spiritual authority even in challenging situations. Reigning in life through Christ is not about having perfect circumstances. It is about having God’s life flow through us, blessing those around us and transforming our environment.

Final Thoughts

Reigning in life is not about waiting until we are perfect, rather, we make it our goal to move from glory to glory. The more we align with God, the more He manifests Himself through us. God’s invitation remains open. Receive His grace, live to genuinely please Him, not to flatter Him, and step fully into your God-given authority to reign in life through Jesus Christ.
