Growing Spiritually (Pt. 3): The Role of the Holy Spirit

By Pastor Chinedu Emmanuel

“Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.” – 1 Cor. 2:12

The role of the Holy Spirit is to, first of all, testify about Jesus to us. (John 15:26) He also guides us into all truth and shows us things to come.

We are joint heirs with Jesus; everything He has from the Father is ours – His life, privilege, position, and righteousness. All that He is will be revealed to us by the Holy Spirit. We were created in the new man to be like Him in the new birth, that way we see ourselves for who we really are. We understand all our new privileges and abilities in Christ Jesus, we understand truly that we are no more of this world because He is not of this world. We are of God and are sons of God. With this understanding we begin to live the life that is now native to us. The life of Christ for the old life is gone and dead!! Sin is now dethroned in us as sin cannot control us anymore. We are free and free indeed. We live our new righteous life of Christ, powered by Him.

Ephesians 4:24 Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.

That way He guides us into all truth is by revealing the truth Himself which is Christ Jesus. Also, He guides us in the will of God about us not specifically revealed in Scripture. Like who to marry and other big decisions we make in life.

Jesus asked a very important question, “Who do you say I am?” Simeon replied that He was the Messiah, the son of the living God. It is important to have a revelation of who Jesus is beyond mental accent which doesn’t go beyond our mental perception. Paul knew Christ beyond just a mental perception. 2 Cor 5:16 So we have stopped evaluating others from a human point of view. At one time we thought of Christ merely from a human point of view. How differently we know him now! NLT

One way the Holy Spirit guides us to the truth is through the people He has appointed, anointed and sent to teach us. We need to have a teachable heart; respect and honor the Holy Spirit. With the wrong attitude, we will quench the Holy Spirit.

TO HEAR HIM AND UNDERSTAND HIM, WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND THAT HIS WORDS ARE ONLY SPIRITUALLY UNDERSTOOD NOT MENTALLY PROCESSED, BUT SIMPLY REVEALED TO US BY HIM.

Never try to reason Him out and figure Him out. You will not be able to.1 Cor 2:14 “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned” KJV

1 Cor 1: 21 “Since God in his wisdom saw to it that the world would never know him through human wisdom, he has used our foolish preaching to save those who believe.” NLT

PRAYER FOR THE REVELATION

We now seek this revelation by praying for God to open our eyes…our spirit eyes of understanding!!!! WE MAKE TIME FOR OUR PERSONAL STUDIES OF SCRIPTURES. NOT JUST READING. We were instructed to study the Scriptures not just read; this shows God we are seeking with all of our heart. We cannot find unless we seek with all of our heart. We must attend the gathering of His people to hear His name and hear His word taught and preached by those He has called. If you do not, then you are not seeking with all of your heart. It means we have more important things than His word and He will not honor that choice by wasting His pearl on an unwilling person. We meditate on the Scriptures day and night as we were instructed to do so that we don’t forget what we learnt. Finally, we practice what we learnt. If we don’t, He will not give us more revelation. Luke 8:18 “So pay attention to how you hear. To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given. But for those who are not listening, even what they think they understand will be taken away from them.” NLT
