Living by Example
By Pastor Chinedu Emmanuel
Philippians 4:9 “The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.”
Many people treat attending church as a routine, sitting as passive listeners rather than active participants. However, God works powerfully through His Word, providing all that is needed to heal, deliver, and restore lives. To truly benefit from this, believers must transform their approach to engaging with their faith by shifting from relying on human effort to resting in Christ. Here are the core principles for living a life that truly models the gospel.
Be a Doer, Not Just a Hearer
The foundation of the Christian walk is not merely claiming to be a believer, but actively applying God’s teachings. Faith requires applying what you have learned through both teaching and example. Simply hearing the Word without acting on it is a form of self-deception. Action is the key that activates the blessing and power of the Word in your life. Stepping outside of God’s will opens the door to darkness, while acting on His Word keeps you grounded in His will.
Let Your Life Be the Gospel
Every Christian especially leaders and parents, is called to model the life of Christ so vividly that others can read the gospel through their daily actions. Your internal faith must shine outwardly as a light to the world. A person’s character, integrity, and reverence can win over unbelievers without a single preached word. Leadership should be rooted in service and attractive conversation, not harsh imposition or throwing your weight around. Engaging in foolish arguments, political disputes, and godless chatter only generates anger and ruins your personal testimony. Words have a significant impact on a Christian’s credibility, so communication with family and coworkers must be gracious.
The Shift from Law to Grace
A common source of frustration for believers is trying to live a righteous life through sheer human effort. Understanding the difference between the Old and New Testaments is crucial for spiritual freedom. The Old Testament was built on human obedience to the law, which ultimately resulted in failure because humanity could not bear the burden. The New Testament is not about strictly doing the law yourself, but about believing in Christ so He can manifest the life of God through you. Religious activities, such as fasting or going to church, cannot substitute for Christ and will lead to pride or frustration if used to earn God’s acceptance. True New Testament obedience is defined as faith in Christ, which results in obedience to His truth.
Resting in the Vine
Jesus offered a powerful invitation to stop struggling and find rest in Him. The spiritual life is not a natural human life; it is produced entirely by the Spirit. Jesus is the true vine, and believers are simply the branches. Just as a branch cannot produce fruit on its own, human beings cannot produce God’s righteous character without being attached to Christ, who is the source of eternal life. Disconnecting from faith in Christ Jesus to rely on personal effort leads to spiritual dryness and dead faith. Through faith and trust in God, believers enter a state of spiritual rest, ceasing from their own impossible works. In this rest, they allow the Holy Spirit to guide them with divine wisdom and manifest Christ’s new life in practical ways, remembering that without Christ, we can do nothing.
By humbling yourself, avoiding needless strife, and trusting entirely in Jesus to work through you, your life will naturally produce good fruit and serve as a powerful example to the world.
