Reigning in Life: The Knowledge of God

Reigning in Life: The Knowledge of God

By Pastor Chinedu Emmanuel

Romans 5:17 “For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!”

Reigning in life through Christ does not happen by accident. It is the result of a life that has come to the end of itself and has fully yielded to God. Scripture shows us that God’s desire is not for believers to struggle through life on their own strength, but to reign through alignment with Him. “Those who receive abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:17).

At the center of reigning in life is the knowledge of God. Knowing God is not simply knowing facts about Him or engaging in religious activity. Many believers know Scripture, attend church, and serve faithfully, yet still live governed by self rather than surrendered to God. When God is not real and actively present in a person’s daily consciousness, life becomes driven by effort instead of surrender.

Printed Directions vs Live Leading

Before smartphones and GPS, people relied on MapQuest. You had to print out your directions before leaving the house and hope everything went according to plan. Once you started driving, there were no updates. No voice guiding you. No rerouting if you missed a turn. If you got off course, you either pulled over to figure it out yourself, asked random people for help, or kept driving, trusting you’d somehow end up in the right place. Many Christians live the same way, relying on what God said once, past revelations, or yesterday’s understanding, while trying to navigate today’s challenges in their own strength.

But today, most of us use Google Maps. Google Maps stays connected. It speaks in real time. If you miss a turn, it doesn’t condemn you, it simply says, “Recalculating,” and redirects you. As long as you stay connected, you will still reach your destination. This is the picture of a believer who truly knows God. God is not distant or silent; He actively leads, corrects, and redirects those who yield to Him.

A MapQuest Christian relies on self and past instructions. A Google Maps Christian relies on God in the present moment. One strives; the other surrenders. One panics when life shifts; the other trusts God to redirect. This is the difference between surviving life and reigning in it.

The “One Thing” Priority

Reigning in life also requires clarity about what we glorify. What do you glory in? Your wisdom, your bank account, or your titles? Jeremiah 9:23–24 reminds us that the only thing worth boasting about is that we understand and know God. King David and the Apostle Paul exemplified living with a single, unwavering focus. David desired to dwell in God’s house and behold His beauty above all else. Paul considered his entire pedigree and achievements as “rubbish” compared to the surpassing excellence of knowing Christ. True reign in life comes when our hearts are anchored in the “one thing”—knowing and being known by God.

Living as a “Dead Man”

The ultimate mark of Christian maturity is the subjugation of the will. In Gethsemane, Jesus prayed, “Not my will, but yours be done.” Maturity is reaching the point where, like a dead man, you have no personal ambition or “right” to yourself. When you are insulted, you love. When you suffer injustice, you forgive. You become a vessel that God carries wherever He wants to go. This surrender is not weakness. It is the power and freedom that allow God to reign fully in and through your life.

Discipleship and Daily Yielding

This is where discipleship comes in. Discipleship is not learning more rules or trying harder to be “perfect.” It is learning how to stay connected to the Spirit and follow His leading daily. A disciple is not someone who merely starts with God but someone who continues with Him, moment by moment, decision by decision. Once you experience the power and ease of being led by the Spirit, you do not return to the burden of human effort or self-reliance. As the Apostle Paul challenged the Galatians, “After starting your Christian life in the Spirit, why are you now trying to become perfect by your own human effort?” (Galatians 3:3).

God never intended believers to begin in grace and continue in striving. Reigning in life flows from staying yielded to the Spirit, allowing Christ to rule within. Even when wrong turns are made, He recalculates the path, using every step to shape maturity and Christlikeness.

Reflect and Respond

Our walk with the Lord is a lifelong journey of consistent realigning. It is a “pressing on” that requires us to forget what is behind and reach for what is ahead. Ask yourself today:

  • Is God a part of my daily calculations, or just a Sunday habit?
  • Am I resisting His discipline, or am I allowing it to train me in righteousness?
  • Is my “one thing” truly knowing Him?

Reigning in life through Christ is not about having all the answers or making perfect decisions. It is about discipleship, surrender, and staying connected. When Christ reigns on the inside, believers can reign in life, no matter what the road looks like.
