The Manifestations of the Holy Spirit
By Pastor Chinedu Emmanuel
1 Corinthians 12:1 “Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed.”
Have you ever walked into a church service and felt like things were just going through the motions? It is incredibly easy to drift naturally into empty religion and cold routine. But God has called us to something much deeper than sitting as benchwarmers on a Sunday morning. He has invited every single believer into a life powered by the supernatural.
In 1 Corinthians 12:1, the Apostle Paul writes, “Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.” Other ancient, trusted translations, such as the Young’s Literal Translation render this phrase as “concerning the spiritual things.” God explicitly commands us not to be ignorant about how His Spirit operates. Why? Because everything of the Spirit is activated by faith, and faith comes by hearing. If we are ignorant of these spiritual tools, we can never manifest them.
The Sovereign Move
Before looking at how these gifts function, we must clear up a major modern abuse. Too many people treat the anointing of God like a Christmas gift, such as a new iPad or a wristwatch. When you give someone a wristwatch, they own it; they can choose when to wear it, how to use it, and you no longer have a say. But the power of God does not belong to us like a piece of personal property. You cannot manipulate the Holy Spirit or manufacture a miracle whenever you feel like showing off.
“God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongeth unto God.” Psalm 62:11
Power and mercy are the exclusive prerogatives of God. He does not relinquish His power; He simply chooses to use us as vessels to manifest it. According to 1 Corinthians 12:11 and Hebrews 2:4, the Holy Spirit distributes and manifests these gifts exactly as He wills. We do not use the Holy Spirit; the Holy Spirit uses us.
What is the Purpose of these Spiritual Gifts?
The Holy Spirit does not manifest through us to make us look spiritual, powerful, or important. The gifts are strictly given for two reasons:
- For the Benefit of the Church: As noted in 1 Corinthians 12:7, the evidence of the Spirit’s presence is given to each person for the common good of everyone. It is a ministry designed to heal, comfort, and build up the community.
- As a Tool for Evangelism: Unbelievers naturally walk by sight because they are spiritually dead. Jesus said in John 4:48, “Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.” In Acts 8, the people of Samaria gave heed to Philip’s message not just because he was a good speaker, but because they heard and saw the miracles confirming the word. Signs and wonders are the validation that the Kingdom of God is real.
Discerning the Counterfeit
Because supernatural things are so captivating, we must remain highly alert: not every miracle is from God. The Bible warns that there are false miracles and deceptive signs. In Acts 8:9-11, a sorcerer named Simon bewitched an entire city with occult magic, and the people deified him, calling him “the great power of God.”
How do we distinguish a genuine move of the Spirit from a clever counterfeit?
- The Glaring Spotlight: False ministers take the glory for themselves and make their ministry all about their own name, their brand, or their personal status. A genuine minister will always point people directly to Jesus, saying, “Behold the Lamb of God, behold the Healer.”
- The Obsession with Material Wealth: If a ministry’s primary emphasis is making you rich overnight, focusing entirely on things that perish rather than things eternal, step away. The Bible warns that false teachers will make merchandise of you.
- The Test of Character: A bad tree cannot produce good fruit. No matter how accurate a person’s prophecy or vision seems, if their life behind closed doors is plagued by immorality, manipulation, or unaccountability, their power is not from God. Our true credential is a life that bears the fruit of the Spirit.
The One-Man Ministry Model is Not Biblical
For decades, much of the modern church has relied heavily on a flawed concept: the idea that the pastor or the prophet is the only one who has the power, while everyone else just watches. That model is simply not in the New Testament. In 1 Corinthians 14:26, Paul outlines what a healthy church gathering looks like:
“How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation…”
A healthy church grows when every single part engages and contributes. God gave ministry offices—apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers not to do all the work, but to equip the saints so that you can do the work of the ministry. You are the hands through which He wants to heal and the mouth through which He wants to speak.
Activating the Fire Within
The ultimate doorway to this supernatural lifestyle is the baptism of the Holy Spirit. From the Old Testament kings and priests to Jesus Himself at the Jordan River, the power for service only arrives when the Holy Spirit comes upon an individual.
If you have been baptized in the Spirit, the inner fire is already there, but it can lie dormant. As Paul urged Timothy, you must fan that gracious gift into a burning flame. Stop letting fear or insecurity keep you quiet. When the Holy Spirit prompts you to speak, release yourself and step out in boldness.
When you sit back, your spiritual growth stalls. But when you engage, practice the Word, and allow yourself to be a vessel for others, your gifting multiplies. Let’s step out of the audience, stop being benchwarmers, and become the signs and wonders God created us to be.
