Righteousness vs. The Grasshopper Mentality

Righteousness vs. The Grasshopper Mentality

By Pastor Chinedu Emmanuel

2 Corinthians 5:21  “He made Christ who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that in Him we would become the righteousness of God [that is, we would be made acceptable to He and placed in a right relationship with Him by His gracious favor].” (AMP)

Many Christians live in constant defeat, feeling unworthy to ask for God’s blessings or expect answers to their prayers. This text explains the biblical concept of righteousness by shifting your perspective from human effort to divine grace so you can live with true spiritual boldness.

The “Grasshopper Complex”

In Numbers 13:33, the Israelite spies looked at the giants in Canaan and said, “We were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.” Even though God had promised them victory, their low self-image destroyed their confidence.

Today, many believers suffer from this same “grasshopper complex.” They focus on their flaws, accept condemnation, and live in constant fear of rejection by God. The cure for this paralysis is understanding what righteousness actually means.

Righteousness is not a feeling; it is a legal status given to you by God. It consists of:

  • Right Standing: An unchanging position before God.
  • Justification: Being officially declared innocent.

When God declares you righteous, your sin account is wiped completely clean, leaving no room for condemnation.

The Replaced Constitution

The Bible contrasts two opposing ways of obtaining righteousness:

Man’s Righteousness (The Old Way)

God’s Righteousness (The New Way)

Human effort and keeping the Law of Moses.

Produced by God; given as a free gift.

100% perfect obedience to every rule.

Based entirely on the sinless nature of Jesus.

Failed. Described as “filthy rags” (Isaiah 64:6).

Successful. It satisfies God’s standards perfectly.

Expired. Abolished when Christ came (Romans 10:4).

Active. The current system under grace.

The Law of Moses was a temporary diagnostic tool designed to point out human sin, acting like a strict tutor until Christ arrived (Galatians 3:19, 23-24). Now that Christ is here, the tutor’s job is done.

Trying to earn God’s favor through your own good deeds today is like swiping an expired credit card. It is an invalid currency in the New Covenant. If you try to justify yourself by your performance, you separate yourself from the system of grace (Galatians 5:4).

The Great Exchange

Because human effort always falls short of perfection, God provided the righteousness He requires through a legal trade: “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” — 2 Corinthians 5:21

God placed your entire debt and punishment onto Jesus at the cross. In return, He credited Jesus’ flawless perfection to your account.

  • Imputation: An accounting term meaning to credit a balance to someone else (Romans 4:6). God deposited Christ’s credit score into your spiritual account.
  • Redemption: The payment of a ransom to free a captive. Jesus paid your debt in full with His blood (1 Peter 1:18-19). God accepted this sacrifice as final satisfaction (Isaiah 53:10-11), legally clearing your record.

Benefits of Your New Identity

  • Inheriting Promises: The blessings promised to Abraham belong to you through the righteousness of faith, not the law (Romans 4:13). You have a legal right to expect God’s favor.
  • Spiritual Stability: Without this truth, your confidence rises when you do well and plummets when you make a mistake. Divine righteousness stabilizes you because “whoever believes in Him shall not be put to shame” (Romans 9:33).
  • Unchanging Family Status: Earthly children do not stop belonging to their parents when they make a mistake. Your identity as a child of God does not fluctuate by the hour; your standing is secure while the Holy Spirit works on your behavior.
  • Authority to Speak: Because you are righteous, you are as bold as a lion (Proverbs 28:1). You can speak to your challenges with confidence, knowing sin and fear have no authority over you.
  • No Need to Chase Mantles: Insecurity causes people to run around chasing special prophets or begging for “the God of Elijah.” But you are a branch connected directly to the true Vine, Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit lives inside you; you don’t need to borrow someone else’s spiritual coat.

So stop looking at yourself through the lens of your past mistakes. Reject the grasshopper mentality and accept God’s definition of who you are: the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus.
