Anchored in the Word

Anchored in the Word

By Pastor Chinedu Emmanuel

Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.”

In a world full of shifting cultural standards and trending opinions, where do you turn for absolute truth? For a believer, the answer is fixed. True faith does not rely on human wisdom, emotional highs, or personal philosophies; it relies entirely on the written Word of God. If we look at the patterns of Jesus and the early apostles, they didn’t rely on clever storytelling to persuade people; they constantly referred back to the Bible.

Back to the Source

When Jesus walked with the disciples after His resurrection, He didn’t just share comforting stories. He asked, “How do you read it?” and showed them through text that “thus it was necessary for Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead” (Luke 24:46). Everything He did was authenticated by scripture.

The Apostle Paul followed this exact blueprint. In Acts 28:23, he spent an entire day testifying about the Kingdom of God, persuading his listeners strictly from the Law of Moses and the Prophets.

If a message is not anchored in the scriptures, it cannot be claimed as the Word of God. Without scripture, it is far too easy to interject human reasoning, personal biases, and fleeting emotions.

As 1 Thessalonians 2:13 reminds us, when you receive biblical teaching, you welcome it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectively works in you who believe. Like the Bereans, we must constantly return to the text to verify what we hear. Truth is not authenticated by numbers or crowds; it is authenticated by scripture.

A Living Word for Real-Life Problems

The Bible is not a static history book. Hebrews 4:12 teaches us that the word of God is quick [alive], and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword. It penetrates the deepest parts of our soul, spirit, thoughts, and intentions.

There is no problem you face that the Word of God does not accurately discern and solve. It offers practical wisdom that directly shapes your physical reality:

  • The Power of the Tongue: Proverbs 18:21 tells us death and life are in the power of the tongue; negative speech sabotages existence.
  • Physical Health: Violating God’s wisdom by abusing your body with destructive substances shortens life.
  • Peace vs. Strife: Living in constant anger and unforgiveness drives up emotional and physical stress, breaking down health. Choosing peace preserves you.

According to Proverbs 4:10, if you receive God’s sayings, the years of your life will be many.

Shift from Sense Knowledge to Revelation Knowledge

The greatest hindrance for many Christians today is living entirely by sense knowledge (what they see and feel) rather than revelation knowledge (what God has said).

When a crisis hits, sense-knowledge Christians start begging a distant God to “come down” and help, waiting for an emotional feeling or a special anointing to fall. But look at what Romans 10:6-8 says: “Say not in thy heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above)… The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart.”

Stop waiting for God to show up from the outside. If you are a believer, He is already there. According to 2 Corinthians 6:2, now is the day of salvation. God has already sent the Comforter. He is your sufficiency.

Why Feeling “Good” in Church is Not Enough

Many believers fall into the trap of living for emotional experiences. They go to a service, feel the anointing, and leave excited. But within two hours of getting home, they are right back to a “normal” state of anxiety. Feeling the anointing is wonderful, but it is not the final answer to your problem. You must receive by faith. A double-minded person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord (James 1:6-7). God operates through the power He has already deposited in your spirit. Ephesians 3:20: Now all glory to God who is able through his mighty power at work within us to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.

Stop crying for help as if you are empty. Step up and declare: “The Lord is my strength. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me!” (Philippians 4:13). All things are possible to him who believes. When you agree with scripture, you ignite the power within.

The Power of the Covenant: A Personal Testimony

A few days ago in the middle of the night, I was hit with a terrible, aggressive fever. It was a real physical and spiritual battle. Instead of panicking, I took my scriptures and started quoting them aloud. As I did, a song rose up in my spirit about the blood of Jesus and our irrevocable blood covenant. When God initiated this covenant, He essentially said: “Everything I have is now yours. I will fight your battles. We are one.” God Himself becomes your salvation, strength, and light. Lying in that bed, I pleaded the blood of Jesus against that sickness.

The next morning, I went to see the doctor to confirm what God had done. After running tests, she looked at me completely baffled and said: “You don’t have the flu. You don’t have COVID. Your lungs are clean, your oxygen is perfect, and you don’t even have a temperature. I don’t know what symptom I am supposed to be treating you for!” There is joy in victory! Your spirit is joined to Christ; you have become one spirit with Him (1 Corinthians 6:17). Even if you encounter something deadly, the Bible promises nothing shall by any means harm you. As Ephesians 1:19 notes, you have an immeasurable and unlimited and surpassing greatness of his power. This is the same power that raised Jesus from the dead, defeating every demonic force. All you have to do is activate it by faith.

Tuning Into the Inward Witness

While God can speak through spectacular means like dreams or visions, these are not His everyday methods. God is orderly. The most common way He communicates with a Christian is through the inward witness of the Holy Spirit. The Bible gives us general foundational knowledge, but it won’t explicitly name the person you should marry or the exact street to live on. For those specific details, the Holy Spirit lives inside your inner spirit, described by Peter as “the hidden man of the heart” (1 Peter 3:4) and Paul called “the inward man” (2 Corinthians 4:16). According to Philippians 2:13, God works in you both to will and to do his good pleasure. He communicates His specific guidance from the inside out, including when to shut your mouth before you say something that ruins your life!

This inward witness operates in two primary ways:

  • The Guard of Peace: When making a decision, the Spirit communicates through a deep, spiritual peace, or a total lack of it. Your head might scream that a setup makes sense, but if your spirit is restless, that is the Holy Spirit saying, “Stop.” This peace acts like a military garrison guarding your heart (Philippians 4:7).
  • Spiritual Intuition: The Holy Spirit frequently utilizes your inner “gut feeling.” You might be listening to someone tell a beautifully organized story, but inside your spirit, a light goes off and you know they are lying. Or you might be heading out to run an errand and suddenly lose all inner peace. Don’t ignore that, the Spirit knows if a trap or an accident lies ahead and is trying to deliver you.

When you try to force a decision in the flesh that the Holy Spirit is not backing, you will notice a distinct lack of spiritual strength. But when He is in it, His grace carries you effortlessly. Close your ears to public opinion, ignore the doubts of your natural senses, and listen to the quiet, powerful witness of the Spirit within you.
