Hearing the Voice of God (Pt. 3)

Hearing the Voice of God (Pt. 3)

By Pastor Chinedu Emmanuel

John 10:27 “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”

Knowing how God communicates and following His instruction is the foundation of the Christian walk. Just as Samuel initially failed to recognize God’s call because he didn’t know Him yet, you cannot truly know God without learning to recognize His voice. Hearing Him is how we intimately follow Him and live our lives daily.

Hearing God’s voice is essential because;

    • It confirms your identity: Obeying God’s voice validates your position as His child and disciple. Romans 8:14 notes that “as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God”—a phrase indicating a specific, definitive group, rather than everyone. Furthermore, Jesus states in John 10:27, “My sheep hear my voice… and they follow me.” True sheep instinctively recognize their shepherd’s unique voice.
    • It Builds Spiritual Vitality: Obeying God’s word expands your spiritual capacity, a process similar to physical muscle hypertrophy (increase, growth). Conversely, failing to listen and obey leads to spiritual atrophy—the shrinking, degeneration, and weakening of your spirit. As Matthew 4:4 states, we survive by every word proceeding from the mouth of God. Acting on God’s voice directly nourishes and strengthens your spiritual muscles.
    • His Anointing Rubs Off on Us : Proximity to God ensures His power influences you, much like sitting near a fire radiates physical heat. In John 5:30, Jesus explained that He decided only as He heard from the Father, walking in uninterrupted fellowship. When Moses descended Mount Sinai in Exodus 34:29, his face radiated God’s glory simply from talking with Him, though he was entirely unaware of it. Continually abiding in His presence yields a fullness of joy that corrects human flaws like anger tantrums.
    • It Produces Daily Victory: Faith for daily life and your protective shield of faith come exclusively by hearing God’s voice. Romans 10:17 establishes that faith comes by hearing the word of God. You cannot generate faith through prayer alone; you must first hear something specific to believe it. According to 1 John 5:4, faith is the weapon that overcomes the world; without hearing His active voice, you are left to live in presumption.
    • It Activates Covenant Privileges: The Holy Spirit is a teacher sent to reveal your spiritual inheritance. Psalm 107:20 says He sent His word and healed them, but a prescription does nothing if it remains uncollected. You must actively hear and welcome the word for it to work. First Thessalonians 2:13 commends those who received the gospel not as the word of men, but as the word of God, which effectively works in those who believe.

“He who has ears to hear….” Jesus frequently emphasized this phrase throughout the Gospels and in Revelation, calling listeners to do three distinct things:

  1. Pay Attention: Intentionally incline your ear to His words.
  2. Understand: Grasp the true meaning behind what God is saying.
  3. Apply: Actively practice the shared truth in your daily life.

This warning separates church congregations into two categories:

The Active Listener: An intentional person aiming to comprehend and immediately execute what they hear.
The Passive Listener: Someone who merely registers physical sound waves while their mind wanders, blocking the very word sent to heal and help them.

God communicates with his people through:

The Written Scripture

The Bible is the living, current voice of God, not a static historical document. When you read a promise or command, it is a personal letter breathing rhema directly to you. While God is supernatural, He is rarely spectacular; He meets us at our level in ordinary places such as the kitchen, bathroom, etc.

The Inward Witness

God frequently guides us using nonverbal communication via the inward witness of the Holy Spirit, which communicates deep within your human spirit rather than your head, emotions, or biases. Philippians 4:7 calls this the peace of God that surpasses all human understanding. When you experience this deep inner peace, it is God’s green light. If you lack it, it acts as an internal check or restraint warning you to halt—even if your logical mind is screaming otherwise. Training yourself to recognize this quiet internal check will save you from major regrets, wasted time, and squandered money. Ground yourself in this steady, internal witness of God.
