Empowered by the Spirit

Empowered by the Spirit

By Pastor Chinedu Emmanuel

Acts 1:8  “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you…

In a world filled with shifting cultural values, deception, and opposition, believers often wonder how to stand firm in their faith. From navigating the challenges of daily family life to remaining steadfast in their walk with God, the answer is not found in human effort or worldly wisdom. Instead, it lies in the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit works through believers to demonstrate the reality of the resurrected Christ as the living Lord. Through His Spirit, Jesus heals, delivers, and reveals the supernatural realities of the Kingdom of God among people. These manifestations serve as a powerful witness that Jesus is alive and that the salvation He offers is available today, just as it was when He walked the earth in human form.

During His earthly ministry, Jesus preached with the power of the Holy Spirit, healed the sick, raised the dead, and demonstrated the reality of God’s Kingdom. He also entrusted His followers with the responsibility of continuing this ministry. Through the baptism of the Holy Spirit, believers are empowered to witness for Christ and minister in His name, relying on the same Spirit who empowered Jesus during His earthly ministry.

One Spirit, One Source

A common question among believers is whether the Holy Spirit who dwells within us is the same Spirit who comes upon believers for empowerment, or whether these experiences involve different spirits. The Bible makes it clear that there is only one Holy Spirit, who works in unity with God the Father and God the Son.

  • Ephesians 4:4–6 emphasizes that there is one body and one Spirit, one Lord, one faith, and one baptism. It also highlights the unity of God, who is above all, through all, and in all.

  • Romans 8:9 uses the expressions Spirit of God and Spirit of Christ to describe the same divine Spirit dwelling in believers.

When Jesus walked the earth in human form, He lived and ministered within the limitations of His humanity, depending on the power of the Holy Spirit. Following His resurrection and glorification, Christ became a life-giving Spirit, as explained in 1 Corinthians 15:45. Through the Holy Spirit, God’s presence is now at work in believers.

Why We Need Spiritual Empowerment Today

The early church faced immense pressure, hostility, and false teachings. Rather than relying solely on intellectual arguments or worldly systems, the believers turned to God in prayer. They were filled with the Holy Spirit and received boldness to proclaim the gospel despite opposition, as recorded in Acts 4:29–31.

Today, Christians face similar challenges. Without continually depending on the Holy Spirit, it is easy to become spiritually weary, struggle to remain consistent in prayer, and be swayed by confusion or deception. We need His strength, guidance, and wisdom to remain steadfast in our faith and fulfill God’s purpose for our lives.

In John 5:19, Jesus explained that the Son could do nothing of Himself but only what He saw the Father doing. His ministry demonstrated complete dependence on the Father. If Jesus modeled such dependence during His earthly ministry, how much more should we depend on God rather than our own strength?

Receiving and Operating in the Spirit’s Power

The baptism of the Holy Spirit is God’s promised gift to believers, empowering them for service, witness, and effective ministry.

  • How It Is Received: The Bible records different instances in which people received the Holy Spirit. These include prayer and the laying on of hands, as seen in Acts 8:14–17 and Acts 19:1–6, as well as the outpouring of the Spirit while people were hearing the gospel, as recorded in Acts 10:44–46.

  • Who Can Minister It: God can use faithful disciples of Jesus Christ to pray for others to receive the Holy Spirit. Ananias, for example, was sent by the Lord to pray for Saul so that he might regain his sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit, as recorded in Acts 9:10–17.

  • The Evidence of Spiritual Empowerment: The Bible records instances in which believers spoke in tongues as the Holy Spirit gave them utterance. Acts 2:3–4 (NKJV) states:

“Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”

Beyond these manifestations, the work of the Holy Spirit should also be evident in transformed lives, spiritual fruit, boldness in witnessing, and the development of Christlike character. Emotional experiences alone are not the measure of spiritual maturity. The Spirit’s work should produce lasting evidence of God’s transforming power in our lives.

Keeping Christ at the Center

The ultimate ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify Jesus and reveal Him to us. In John 16:14, Jesus said of the Spirit, “He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you” (NKJV). When we yield to the Holy Spirit, resist habitual sin, and anchor our faith in the Word of God rather than fleeting feelings, we become better equipped to live victoriously and fulfill God’s purpose for our lives. We must remain sensitive to His leading, allowing Him to correct, strengthen, and transform us daily.

Let us continually seek the Holy Spirit, desiring a fresh touch of His presence and a deeper work of His power in our lives. As we walk in the Spirit, may our lives reflect the character of Christ, demonstrate the love of God, and bear witness to the truth of the gospel.
