The Word and Fresh Anointing
By Pastor Chinedu Emmanuel
Acts 1:8 “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.
Many believers experience seasons when their spiritual lives or ministries seem dry or powerless despite attending church and studying Scripture. This may indicate a need to move beyond biblical knowledge toward the transforming power of God’s Word and continued dependence on the Holy Spirit.
The Word of God: More Than Information
God’s Word is intended not merely to inform the mind but also to transform the heart and guide our actions. In John 6:63, Jesus declares that His words are spirit and life. Intellectual agreement with Scripture is not the same as living faith. Genuine faith involves believing, obeying, and applying God’s Word in daily life. In Luke 8:11, Jesus identifies the seed in the parable of the sower as the Word of God. Like a seed, the Word must be received into a receptive heart and cultivated through meditation and obedience to produce fruit. Therefore, spiritual growth requires more than knowing what Scripture says. It requires allowing its truth to shape our thoughts, decisions, and responses.
Walking in Spiritual Vitality
Spiritual maturity requires the practical application of God’s Word and continual reliance on the Holy Spirit. Believers cultivate spiritual vitality by studying and meditating on Scripture, obeying its instructions, seeking the Spirit’s guidance in prayer, and persevering through challenges.
True spiritual growth is demonstrated not merely through biblical knowledge or outward religious activity but through increasing faith, obedience, love, and Christlike character. These qualities reflect the transforming work of God in the believer’s life.
The Fresh Anointing: Empowerment for Effective Christian Living
While the Word establishes the foundation of faith, the Holy Spirit empowers believers to live faithfully, reflect the character of Christ, and serve as lights in the world. Through His indwelling presence, the Spirit guides and transforms believers, producing the fruit of the Spirit as evidence of the new life received through salvation.
However, the Spirit’s work within believers must be distinguished from His empowering presence upon them for effective service and witness. In Acts 1:8, Jesus promises that believers will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon them, enabling them to become His witnesses.
The Bible also demonstrates the importance of renewed empowerment. In Acts 2:1–4, the disciples were initially filled with the Holy Spirit. Later, in Acts 4:31, they were filled again and spoke God’s Word boldly despite opposition. This account illustrates that previous spiritual experiences do not eliminate the need for continued dependence on the Holy Spirit.
Philippians 1:19 further highlights this principle. While imprisoned, Paul expressed confidence that his circumstances would ultimately result in his deliverance through the prayers of believers and the provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ. His words emphasize the importance of prayer and the Spirit’s sustaining supply in times of difficulty, enabling believers to remain steadfast in their faith and ministry.
The fresh anointing, therefore, represents the believer’s ongoing need for God’s strength, guidance, and empowerment. Psalm 92:10 uses the imagery of fresh oil to convey renewal and strength. As believers depend on God, they receive the grace needed to persevere, serve faithfully, and remain fruitful.
Conclusion
The Christian life requires more than accumulating biblical knowledge or relying on past spiritual experiences. God’s Word must transform our hearts and guide our actions, while the Holy Spirit empowers us both to reflect Christ’s character and to serve as effective witnesses for Him.
As we allow the Word to take root in our hearts and continually depend on the Holy Spirit for renewal and empowerment, our lives can increasingly demonstrate spiritual maturity, steadfast faith, and fruitful service, bringing glory to God.
